Focus on sustainability and partnerships

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
With the 2030 Agenda, 193 member states of the United Nations have agreed on an ambitious action plan. The goal is to achieve 17 goals that combine social, ecological and economic sustainability — the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Measures to achieve all of these goals are extremely important in order to shape a sustainable future together. At Wastics, we specifically promote five of the goals with our solution.

Goal 8: Promote sustainable, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full productive employment and decent work for allDecent work and economic growth: Thanks to the ecological and sustainable management of potential secondary raw materials, Wastics increases recycling activity in Austria. Employment and added value are generated, economic benefits (in terms of cost efficiency) are achieved, resource efficiency in consumption and production is improved, and a contribution is made to decoupling economic growth from environmental pollution.

Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and drive innovationOur goal is to make European industry more sustainable by calculating and evaluating the environmental impact of industrial processes and promoting ecological waste management solutions. Through digital innovations, we also want to enable developing countries to make industrial processes more efficient and sustainable.

Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patternsMost of the Earth's resources are limited, and economically viable resources are becoming increasingly scarce. A significant part of the resources consumed is spent on the production of goods. To make production more sustainable, fewer primary resources must be used. One way to meet this challenge of conserving resources is to use waste as secondary raw materials in production. When a company disposes of its waste via Wastics, all possible treatment methods for the waste stream are identified. When it is economically feasible, the treatment method is chosen which derives the greatest material or raw material benefit from the waste so that the waste can be reused as a resource.

Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its effectsWaste management in Europe causes 115.5 million tons of CO₂ equivalent (CO2e) of greenhouse gas emissions annually. The amount of greenhouse gases emitted in waste management depends on waste transportation and the treatment or disposal methods used. Thanks to Wastics, companies can always rely on the disposal solution with the lowest climate-damaging effects. Conservation of resources and climate protection go hand in hand. By increasing resource efficiency, global greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by up to 63%. In order to increase resource efficiency, Wastics identifies the recycling potential of waste and enables increased use of secondary materials to substitute primary resources. The extraction and processing of primary raw materials is responsible for 23% of greenhouse gas emissions. This proportion can be reduced by using secondary materials.

Goal 15: Life on landThe treatment of waste, in particular hazardous waste, can also release substances other than greenhouse gases, some of which have an acute potential for harm to humans and nature. Soil, water and biological diversity can also be affected to varying degrees by certain processes. Since Wastics ensures optimised treatment of (hazardous) waste and always regards waste disposal as a last option, harmful effects on living organisms as well as dangers and risks for future generations are avoided or reduced. These are measures to reduce the destruction of natural habitats, halt biodiversity loss and protect species.

With the “Seedfinancing - Innovative Solutions” program (creative, social and sustainable companies) finances and supports d Projects from all sectors in the development of innovative start-up ideas that generate positive social added value and high market opportunities as part of scalable business models.

At the end of 2022, Wastics received “Seed Financing - Innovative Solutions” funding from AWS

The GreenStart program, initiated and financed by the Climate and Energy Fund, supports the development of green business ideas in the areas of energy efficiency, renewable energy, mobility and agriculture. Each year, the ten most promising start-ups in these areas are selected by a jury of experts and accepted into the greenstart accelerator program.

In May 2022, Wastics was selected as one of the TOP 10 start-ups and included in the Greenstart program.

Since its founding in 2002, INiTS has developed into the high-tech incubator for the city of Vienna and one of the best academic incubators in the world. INiTS supports high-performance start-ups in the areas of research, technology and innovation and has become a driving force in the Austrian start-up ecosystem. Admission to one of the INITS programs is an indicator of the exceptional quality of a startup and significantly increases its chances of success.

In March 2022, Wastics was accepted into the INiTS incubation program.

Since 2016, the Startup Service at FH Campus Wien has been supporting students, alumni and employees in developing ideas and promoting entrepreneurial spirit: At the heart of the Startup Service is the one-year pre-incubation program “Startup Corner”, which offers extensive support from experts and mentors as well as a broad network for startups.

Wastics has been supported by FH Campus Wien since December 2021

The University of Agricultural Sciences Vienna (BOKU) annually awards the BOKU Founder Prize to BOKU-related start-ups for the best idea that led to a start-up. The prize is awarded for outstanding and exemplary achievements in developing new business concepts, for start-ups with social impact, for contributions to achieving the SDGs or for innovative ideas. Wastics impressed the jury with its business concept.

In October 2022, Wastics was awarded the BOKU Founder Prize
